Rabbi Benjamin J. Hollander z’’l was beloved for his teaching of Torah as well as for the kindness he radiated in exemplifying his teachings in life. The reflections on the weekly Torah portion contained in this book were originally presented on Israeli radio during 1993-1994, a year of momentous events in Israel. Those events unfold through Rabbi Hollander's close reading of the Torah text as well as classical and modern commentary brought to bear on 'the need for a Jewishness rooted in our sources and collective modes of expression, but with this special particularity also informed by a sensitivity to all people being “created in the Image of God” and a commitment to our becoming a “blessing for all the families of the earth.”'

These commentaries are ideally suited to weekly Torah study, exploring the abiding themes of Jewish continuity, Jewish unity, holidays, and many other subjects related to personal and communal spiritual life.

Rabbi Benjamin J. Hollander z’’l was beloved for his teaching of Torah as well as for the kindness he radiated in exemplifying his teachings in life. He was among the foremost disciples of Nechama Leibowitz and served as her longtime teaching assistant. Rabbi Hollander augmented his mastery of the classic Torah commentaries and midrash with a deep sensitivity to a text’s literary aspects and psychological insights.

Rabbi Hollander taught at Conservative, Reform and Orthodox institutions in Israel including HUC-JIR, the Schechter Institute for Jewish Studies, the Siegal College of Jewish Studies, and the Hebrew University School for Overseas Students. He served as scholar-in-residence at Camp Ramah, a teacher and guest Rabbi at Congregation Beth Tzedec in Toronto, and as teacher in over 200 synagogues, communities, schools and retreats.

Rabbi Hollander was a founding member of Rabbis for Human Rights. In 1993-1994 he served as the weekly Torah commentator on Kol Yisrael radio.
