Mary Duke McCartt’s fascination with cooking began as a small child. During childhood, she observed and prepared delicious dishes with her mother and aunts and began to appreciate the flavors and techniques of southern cooking. As a young adult, cooking with her mother-in-law further developed her passion. 

Mary Duke attended the University of Tennessee graduating with a BS degree in Home Economics, Food Science, Nutrition, and Food Systems Administration. Using her nutritional expertise as a retired registered Dietitian, Mary Duke developed food programs for underprivileged school children and volunteered for numerous community nutrition projects. 

Mary Duke applies her passion for cooking, vast knowledge of ingredients, and well-developed palate to create new dishes and make classic recipes unforgettably special. She developed a huge following with her weekly food column in a local newspaper and writes a blog,, which features her recipes and cooking tips.
